Outdoor Adventures and Career Readiness: Connecting the Dots for Youth

The outdoors is a great place to learn about oneself. From learning various skills to building confidence and relationships, there are multiple ways to grow as a person. For example, when The Coop Concept created garden beds for Chambers Elementary School, Aurora said, "Something unexpected that I learned about myself is I am surprisingly good at shoveling dirt, or topsoil." While this isn't exactly an applicable skill in the workplace, it's certainly still something new that Aurora learned about herself. Additionally, kids helped create picnic tables that were to be used by the school. These tables were created by woodworking and carpentry. The kids who worked with The Coop Concept might want to pursue these careers after having found that these careers are interesting to them.

The blending of technology with architecture is another career that someone might pursue. The use of AR technology helps with that. It allows one to better visualize what a project might look like using augmented reality. Aurora says, "AR morphs the real world with the virtual world by adding virtual pictures or characters, or both, through a phone’s camera or video viewer." Sparking a kid's interest is hard, but it's rewarding, because one gets to see how they light up when they're actually interested in something. Kids become more talkative, more engaged, and more confident in their abilities when they talk about and do things related to what they know and love.

Career readiness might be intimidating to a high schooler, or a college student, but it is important. It is imperative to a child's development that they know and learn about becoming an adult with a job and adult responsibilities because that is what they will end up being. Time management is a key aspect of this, as well as communication. If kids learn how to communicate well early, then they will be well-suited for the workforce. Communication is the basis of not only learning, but relationships, and speaking one's mind.

Career readiness skills are important to learn, and through outdoor activities, these skills can be learned and improved through practice. These skills are useful for day-to-day life, as well as a working environment. Both cases will help youth become more productive and resilient people.
