How People Can Help Themselves and Others

Community is very important, it is an indicator of social health. Not only that, but it makes one feel good to help others. One's community is an invaluable asset in living through adversity.

Adversity can come in all shapes and sizes, and that is when a community can band together to help. There are two kinds of motivation, intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic comes from within. Helping others because it feels good to you is a form of intrinsic motivation. It creates a positive feedback loop that is self-perpetuating. Aurora says, "How I feel, contributing to my community, is happy, proud, and accomplished." Aurora likes these feelings, and wants more of them, so she continues to perpetuate the loop.

On the other hand, extrinsic motivation comes from outside of oneself. For example, doing something only to get a tangible reward, like a cookie or ice cream. This loop is unsustainable, because external rewards are finite, and won't fulfill oneself like intrinsic motivation.

Ivana says, "The skill that I will bring to my future job is communication. I think with this program I learned to be patient as well as work and communicate with others." Communication is very important to community, because it's how people learn to interact with one another. Creating relationships through communication takes time but it's important. It is important because that is how one creates a reliable community to lean on in times of struggle.
